Letter from Maryland Animal Advocates to Kelly Miller Circus Sponsors

May 28, 2002

Mr. Tom Durkin, Lions' Club

Dear Mr. Durkin,

My mom is a friend of the Lions' Club here in Dundalk and is always telling folks of their good work for children. I had thought the Lions' Club issued a memo urging caution is sponsoring animal circuses. This is due to the history of abuse against animals in these enterprises.

Animals are routinely beaten causing the occasional rampage which injure attendees. Elephants and other animals should only be transported upon the highways when transferring to a sanctuary. They do not belong in tractor trailers traveling from one asphalt lot to the next.

I last collected data on circuses in 1997. The record is replete with cases of physical cruelty against animals in the circus. I can assemble data for you or direct you to web sites for information collection.

Our Organization urges you to terminate the agreement with Kelly Miller Circus stating that animal acts are an inherently cruel practice.

Sincerely,
W. Herbert Morrison, Treasurer
Maryland Animal Advocates, Inc.
