January

Legislative Meeting - Wednesday January 28, 2004
Humane Society of the Untied States (HSUS) and The Fund for Animals

At the start of the 2004 Maryland Legislative session in January, legislative bills are then introduced to congress..

Animal Awareness, The Humane Society of the United States, and The Fund for Animals joined together for a meeting on how YOU can make a tremendous difference for animals in Maryland.

When: Wednesday, January 28th at 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Where: The Towson Library

Meeting Agenda:

- Leghold Traps: Promoting a ban on the recreational use of indiscriminate leghold traps, which cause tremendous and unnecessary suffering to wildlife and any companion animals that are unfortunate enough to encounter them. Passing this bill will prevent the cruel suffering of thousands of animals like the fox who was found still alive after lingering for hours in a leghold trap; she had to be euthanized by animal control because she was unable to recover from her injuries.

- Animal Fighting: Strengthening the current animal fighting law so police and prosecutors can put an end to the horrible bloodsport of dogfighting and cockfighting, a thriving underground industry in Maryland.

- Breed Ban: Fighting a breed specific bill that affects one breed of dog, but does nothing else to address dangerous dog issues. These laws have proven to be very counterproductive.

- Gestation Crates: Banning the use of gestation crates on factory farms in Maryland. This needless device causes prolonged suffering for pregnant pigs on large scale farms by keeping sows in cages that are barely bigger than their own body, for at least 80% of their four year life.

From HSUS: In order to make these bills law, your involvement is crucial, and fortunately, very little of your time is required. Some people think, "No, I'm not that kind of person -- I'm just not political" or "I don't know anything about legislation or these issues, so I better not go." But PLEASE come to this meeting. ANY person who cares about animals at all is needed and it doesn't matter one bit if you've never been involved in legislation or politics before. It's easy to make a difference for the animals. We have everything you need to be an effective advocate - whether it is letter writing, phoning, attending hearings, lobbying, or anything else that you would like to do. We need everyone to be a part of this effort!

Kentucky Fried Chicken is responsible for slitting conscious birds' throats open, and scalding them while they're still alive. They cut the beaks off of mother hens without pain killers and drug their chickens with antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions that would otherwise kill them.
